Changing an air filter is an easy task around the home to preserve the life of your HVAC system and promote clean air around the home. Having a clean, new air filter may help with allergies, asthma, preventing sickness, and other environmental concerns. When the filters get dirty, the system works harder to keep the air circulating, which harms your unit in the long run and decreases the quality of the air you receive through your vents. You should change your filters regularly to ensure the best quality air in your home.
You can change your air filter yourself in a few easy steps.
1. Locate your air filters. If you have air return vents, your filters may be in the walls or the ceiling. 2. Turn off your AC unit.
3. Open the air vent panels. You may need to pry the metal levers open or use a screwdriver, depending on your type of air vent.
4. Remove the old filter. It should lift or slide out without much force. The old filter may have dust and debris on it.
5. Place the new filter into the vent, following the arrows on the filter or instructions on the packaging.
6. Replace the air vent panel, close it, and lock it. Turn your unit back on to check for any possible problems.
7. Keep track of your filter life by setting a reminder on your phone or calendar to check on and/or replace your filter.
8. Breathe easy!
